Question: What is the function of a check valve? What PSI are they rated for?
Answer:    The check valve prevents back flow from the outlet of the pump back into the water tank. Check valves are rated from 200PSI – 250PSI.

Question: How do valves work in a pump?
Answer: The valves work in conjunction with the main diaphragm and piston assembly. These together operate with an upward and downward movement creating a vacuum to pull and push fluid into and out of the pump. The main diaphragm is located in the lower housing and is assembled to the drive assembly by pistons.

Question: What do the following abbreviations or word mean?
GPM
Answer: Gallons per Minute

PSI
Answer: Pressure per Square Inch

Volts
Answer: Current Motor is rated for

Question: What is a diaphragm?
Answer: The diaphragm is the main seal located in the lower housing and is assembled to the drive assembly by pistons. It works in conjunction with the valve assembly with an upward and downward movement creating a vacuum to pull and push fluid into/out of the pump.

Question: How many diaphragms does an electric driven pump have?
Answer: (2) the main diaphragm (located in the drive assembly) and the one located in the switch area (circular shaped –size of a half dollar).

Question: I have a pump and it is priming, but it will not shut-off…it just keeps running. What could be the problem?
Answer: The first problem could be a faulty switch. Please contact SHURflo for repair kits. Also, if fittings, hose clamps are not tightened on the intake side of the pump, pump may not be able to build enough pressure to turn switch off.

Question: My pump is operating, but it cycles on and off when fixtures are in the off position. What could the problem be?
Answer: The valves may be contaminated with foreign debris (internal leak) not allowing pump to hold pressure. Make sure a strainer is being used.

Question: How many volts is a standard Marine pump?
Answer: 12 VDC

Question: As my pump builds pressure water is leaking between the lower housing and the motor. What could the problem be?
Answer: The main diaphragm could have developed a rupture (due to excessive usage). Please contact SHURflo for repair kits.

Question: My pump is not operating correctly. The motor is running hot and turns off for a moment and then starts back up. What could the problem be?
Answer: Most likely, this could be the thermal protector in the motor. SHURflo does not offer components for our motors. Please contact SHURflo for available motors.

Question: What is the difference between continuous and intermittent duty?
Answer: Continuous can run for hours and intermittent is an on / off application (limited operation mode).

Question: Are SHURflo Marine Pumps continuous or intermittent duty?
Answer: Although most are intermittent, some are continuous. Please refer to the installation instructions or the specifications/data sheets.
